Our training for volunteers and our training for professionals differ due to different needs and outcomes required.  Both are accredited and participants can gain a certificate and CPD points for completing it.

For the volunteer

All SAMM volunteers have been bereaved through murder or manslaughter.  Although our volunteers have experienced the effects of traumatic bereavement themselves, our specialist training explores the theories around it and is presented in an easily understood format.  This enables our volunteers to understand how people cope in different ways and empowers them to offer peer support to others in a unique way.

It is offered online via Zoom over four weekly modules.  Each session is supported by clear documentation, sent in an easy to follow format.

Topics include:

  • Understanding the structure of SAMM, its aims, ethos, activities and how it provides peer support to others.
  • Confidentiality, safeguarding, equality and diversity.
  • How to maintain boundaries and self-care.
  • Communication and language.
  • Family dynamics and the effects on children.

Could you volunteer for SAMM?

  • Do you have personal experience of murder or manslaughter ?
  • Are you empathetic, perceptive and caring?
  • Can you maintain confidentiality and work within SAMM’s ethos?
  • Are you emotionally resilient?
  • Are you able to work well individually and as part of our team?
  • Can you use a computer?
  • Are you willing to undergo a DBS check and provide references?
